The rain was pouring down on our tent. I was cold and hungry. The others were trying to make fun of the situation. There was no way out of it: we were going to spend a whole night in the wet, cold forest. When the others were finally quiet, I could feel the chills. The silence was deafening at first. I started struggling with intrusive thoughts (like fear of wild animals, snakes, spiders or insects). They were just popping up and repeated themselves on loop. But after a while I started to get a deep calm feeling. Then it got easier and easier. I couldn’t feel the cold anymore, I guess because of the adrenaline.
Finally, after a while, I felt asleep. I had nightmares all night, mostly about being attacked by weird creatures. My bones were cold when I woke up so I had to get up and move around a bit.
My friends were also awake and I could tell just by looking in their eyes that they didn’t have a comfortable sleep as well. My concern was the clothing. Our jackets were unusable. So we had to wait a little and light a fire to dry and cook our canned food. We gathered some logs and I used my matches to light the fire. I don’t know why, but after that our morale got really high. The others started to make jokes again and that made me feel a sense of relief.
We had a map and knew exactly where to go, but the route was dangerous.
I knew we had to be careful, there were hundreds of ways of being injured. We walked two hours and fortunately, we reached our destination safely.
